Fit Fix Upcyclery: Hems
Hems are generally the last step when sewing a garment, and the simplest to get to when shortening or lengthening. They are also an area that can be refined in straight stitching and clean craftsmanship due to the visibility (or invisibility) of the topstitch or blind stitch. And they are on pretty much everything, so if you are not into sewing garments, they are still an area to practice!
We will practice on quilting cottons for technique refinement. We will also do applied practice on thrift store garments or bring your own project from your pile.
This class will be 75% informational and 25% hands on practice. Stitchlab is available to schedule with limited assistence if you wish to continue practice.
In this class we will cover:
- Types of hems: single fold, double fold, original, curved
- Hem construction: hem allowance, edge finishing, pressing, types of stitching
- How to fit garment lengths to the body.
- Other considerations: tapered or bell shapes, types of fabrics

She has been sewing for 20ish years and has dabbled in many facets and continually hones her practice of construction and design with textiles. |
